Authentic Aspirations
The quest for self discovery and authenticity is something many of us work to achieve throughout our lives. When I was young, I thought by the time I turned 30 I would understand everything. I was sure that I would feel different about myself and life in general. Now, 20 years later, I’m still learning about myself and adjusting to changes as they come along.
Learning to live an authentic and unpretentious life is key to our happiness. One way to do this is to ask ourselves specific questions. How do you handle adversity? What are you doing when you feel the happiest?
I once read that what we like the most about ourselves is the very same thing we like the least. Think about it. One of the things I like the most about myself is the diversity of my interests. This makes for an interesting life, but it can also be perplexing at times. My boyfriend is a builder. It’s his calling and in a way defines who he is. When he isn’t working, he spends his time making furniture and beautiful wood objects. I often find myself envious of those with this kind of focused passion.
Spending time alone to contemplate who we are and what makes us happy is an important step in finding peace and inner bliss. We have to get away from the noise of our lives to hear the quiet messages that come our way.
During our last days of this very hot summer, I hope you can find some quiet alone time to get to know your authentic self better. We have lots of ideas in this issue to get you started. So, happy reading and stay cool!
